Triglycerides

Triglycerides waaaaaaaay too high!?

My total cholesterol is normal but my doc said my Triglycerides are waaaaaaaaaaay too high....they've hit the 200's and two years ago were normal. I'm not a big steak eater....I don't eat fast food....I actually competed in an Ironman in 2004, I do yoga, and brazilian jiu jitsu. What could cause my tri's to shoot up so high? I read that I'm at risk for heart attack but I'm only 35. WTH!!! Could stress raise my tris?

  1. Your system changes and it could now be manufacturing cholesterol. Ask your Dr. to prescibe an anti cholesterol drug like Zetia.
  2. I am not sure if stress can affect them but I have read that cinamon can lower them. Too much cinamon, however, can be bad for your liver but probably harmless if you have a healthy liver.
  3. I hope this site could help.
  4. Sometimes hypertriglyceridemia can be hereditary. When I had mine checked last year, it was 945! I am not overweight and am moderately active. However, my cholesterol was almost normal, as was my good cholesterol. Avoid pastries and lots of starches, and just keep an eye on it to make sure it's coming down to a somewhat better number. Lopid is a good med to take for high triglycerides. It's brought mine down to about 400.
  5. It could be stress and it could also be a pre-diabetic symptom. If you are eating a balanced low fat diet and eating that diet in frequent small meals throughout the day, getting good exercise, and your cholesterol level is 120 or less, then it may be familial. You may need meds to assist with reduction.
  6. It seems to me like you are into good health and so am I. I suggest that you get this book that I am now reading. You don't have to read the whole thing, its pretty long, but its very interesting reading......The Great Cholesterol Con by Anthony Colpo. According to this book you have nothing to worry about.
  7. Well, that is high, but not so much that you need to panic. There is much you can do to get it back down. Try this link: http://medilink-healthlink.tripod.com/id8.html Terry
  8. Definately fish oil! Do the research and you'll see what I'm talking about. Take a look at the website below just to get started. I'm not selling anything, actually I reccomend buying from somewhere cheaper, but this will give you alot of good info on fish oil! My cholesterol went from 307 to 145, and triglycerides from 815 to 243 after 3 months on a good quality fish oil.
  9. Actually, you and your doctor will discuss the best option. Trig level of 200, while high (optimal less than 150), is not absurdely out of control. There are drugs designed specifically to target the triglycerides called Fibrates (Tricor, Lopid) and they are similar wrto adverse effects to the statins used to treat LDL. First and foremost, a trial of lifestyle modification, including diet and exercise should be attempted, lasting ~ 6 months. If that doesn't work, then you start to look for a pharmacological solution. Good news, you LDL and HDL are good, congratulations!!! That lowers you risk for several BAD things despite the trig level. Did the doctor mention anything about you blood sugar? Elevated blood sugars for sustained periods can coincide with elevated triglycerides. There is a test called an HbA1c that can give you a pretty good idea about your sugar control for the past 3 months or so, and if it is less than 7 your probably ok there as well. Hope this helps, i'm very tired.
