- When mine got even higher than that, I was told to eat oatmeal, I did for a whole month, then went back to the doctor and it had fallen down quite a bit.
- Yes, in fact hypothyroidism usually causes the upswing in cholesterol and triglycerides. My doctor missed my hypothyroidism and recommended a low fat, low cholesterol diet. Now that it's been ten years, I am hearing a lot of my doctors don't even pay attention to cholesterol and triglycerides in otherwise healthy patients. If you want to, do what your doctor says. It is important to eat according to the diabetic diet. I have read a book called The Yeast Connection and the diet prescribed in this book is a good one for diabetics to follow because it has no simple carbs, no sweeteners, and high protein and vegetable intake for two weeks as kind of a cleanse, to help your body begin to heal itself. The book is available for order online if you are interested. Some people call the guy a quack, but I know it worked for me. I didn't have diabetes, but I do have polycystic ovarian syndrome, which leaves me in almost the same position as someone who is diabetic. I am insulin intolerant, which means I need to avoid sugar and simple carbs just like diabetics. I never felt better in my life after the first two weeks of the diet. I tried to maintain it, but since I don't have diabetes and I get easily hooked on sweets (I crave them), I wasn't able to make it a life-long commitment. See for yourself and decide if you'd like to try the diet. I think if your doctor could see the diet that is given in the book he would agree it is highly beneficial to diabetics. The book claims people with type 2 diabetes have reversed their ailment. I don't know about that, but I do know it really helped me with my energy and with learning how to eat foods other than regular American food. The book is called The Yeast Connection and the diet is described and recipes are given in The Yeast Connection Cookbook. You can get the cookbook without the other, since the cookbook gives a summary account of The Yeast Connection. I'd only get The Yeast Connection if you really wanted an in-depth explanation of what sugars do to our bodies. The diet recommended in the Yeast Connection Cookbook is also low in fat and cholesterol, so it would please your doctor if he/she has bought into the cholesterol lie. (I'll see if I can find a site for you) Follow your doctor's advice, but learn everything you can that is Alternative. You'll find that natural diets are very basic and can keep you healthier, just because our bodies react badly to processed food. Just about EVERY processed food has some form of sweetener and MSG in it. The Cookbook gives you alternative sweeteners that are less harmful to the system, like stevia tea, mashed banana, and other fruits. If you have a health food store near you and someone to cook for you, the cookbook would be a great benefit to you. The Yeast Connection website offers many recipes. If you don't have a lot of time to cook, I'd search online for recipes for diabetics. Chances are what you find online will be simple to make. I highly recommend cooking in bulk and freezing leftovers so you won't have to cook every day. Whatever you decide to do, I wish you luck. You've suddenly got a lot on your plate, but taking care of yourself by exercising, sleeping well and watching what you eat are what you need to recover at least a semblance of your old self.
