Yes, it will. The ischemia that has already occurred is evidence of the harmful effect of the cholesterol levels. While there is a difference between the LDL and the others, it is good practice to reduce the overal serum cholesterol to significantly reduce the likelihood of further MI episodes.

The act of lowering cholesterol itself has never been shown to protect from heart disease. In any study where cholesterol has been lowered by drugs and there has been an apparent decline in heart attacks, it is not necessarily those that had the greatest reduction that had the most protection. Studies such as the TNT study, the Japan Lipid Intervention Trial, and the A to Z show no correlation between how much cholesterol is lowered and protection from heart attack. those who the greatest reduction in cholesterol levels were not necessarily the ones spared a heart attack. A 54 year old man put onto statins will have a slightly reduced risk of CHD, regardless of how much his cholesterol is lowered. This will be offset by an increased risk of death from cancer, suicide or violence.
